PREMs

Patient Reported

experience measures

Patient-reported experience measures (PREMs) are questionnaires measuring the patients' perceptions of their experience whilst receiving care. They indicate the quality of patient care received by a patient, although they do not measure it directly.

Our perioperative PREM consists of questions pertaining to the experience of patients with regards to Drs explanation of anesthesia, requirements before surgery, follow-up advice etc. The tool is used across GCC Hospitals and shows a score of 100%.

Our Medcare Women & Children Hospital uses a PREM tool for International Patient Safety Goals and has a score of 99.56% from 895 responses. The tool consists of questions pertaining to the experience of patients with regards to correct patient identification, education regarding medication given, and hand hygiene practiced by doctors and nurse.

Outcomes Measures

Patient Reported Outcomes Measures (PROMs) were measured by clinical excellence department of our hospitals to understand the patient's perspectives about the outcome of interventions on their health status.

PROM is a clinical tool which accounts for patients’ own symptoms, functional status, and quality of life. PROMs hold importance as the information obtained by patient's feedback which has the potential to translate into enhanced health care delivery.

We used International PROMs questionnaire/tool to assess the level of satisfaction and quality of care of patients undergoing knee joint replacement, hip joint replacement, natural delivery and the outcomes of interventions for acute coronary syndrome.

The Birth Satisfaction Scale (BSS-R) tool was used in our Aster Hospital Guntur, Andhra Pradesh for 6 months. 73.2% of patients were satisfied with the quality of care provision pertaining to cleanliness, hygiene and support from nurses and doctors. Based on the feedback of patients, various preventive strategies to improve the birth experience has been taken. Steps taken include strengthening communication with patients by providing a separate counselor with communication sessions and antenatal classes regarding preparedness for labor and childbirth from 35weeks of gestation. Also, patients and their partners are encouraged to participate in decision-making, which reinforces their ability to choose and control their childbirth process.

The feedback of patients undergoing Total Knee Replacement (TKR) about the difficulties they experience due to their knee in terms of pain, functional limitations, and knee-related quality of life was taken in multiple units of Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Karnataka. Tools used were KOOS12, Oxford Knee Score, and Knee Society Score. Overall, patients showed significant improvement after TKR surgery as compared to their previous condition and were highly satisfied. The functionality and Quality of life improved and pain decreased considerably for majority of the patients (ranging between 60%-80% across hospitals).
