Pictured here are the finalists from Kenya, United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, India, Australia, United States of America & Afghanistan, who travelled far and wide to be a part of the Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award.

The Covid-19 pandemic is the scariest healthcare problem that the world has faced since the Spanish Flu in 1918. This sinister monster which came spreading havoc world over affecting millions of people and killing nearly a million people in more than 200 countries is the greatest catastrophe that mankind has faced during our lifetime.

The unprecedented influx of patients put tremendous pressure on the available healthcare systems globally as the countries struggled to cop up with the huge surge of the pandemic. This led to breakdown of services in many countries due to the non-availability of medical personnel, personal protective equipment, ventilators etc. The situation deteriorated because of the non-availability of an effective medicine against the Novel Corona virus.

Aster DM Healthcare has been at the epicenter of managing this pandemic in UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Oman among the Gulf Cooperation Council countries as well as five South Indian states ever since the pandemic hit in mid-March. We had treated 7375 number of patients and did testing for 100088 suspected cases during this period. While the wave of
the pandemic is on a declining trend in GCC, it is on an upward swing in India with the country becoming one among the top 3 in total number of infected cases. We are happy that we could be a part of the frontline soldiers in the fight against Covid-19 in the last 5 months gaining lot of insight into Prevention, Clinical Strategies, Medical Protocols, etc. I am proud to report that the mortality of the patients admitted into our hospitals was 0.87% only which underlines the mostefficient management of Covid by our teams.

We thought that it is appropriate to publish the Whitepaper to enlighten the medical fraternity and public of our learnings while managing large number of Covid-19 cases. We hope that
this will help and can be adapted by medical professionals and healthcare organisations to strengthen the response to the deadly disease. I should submit that we are in the process

of learning further from the experience as we are still in the peak of pandemic in India and it
is a fact that we will have to live with Covid-19 till an effective vaccine is introduced. Let me dedicate this Whitepaper to medical professionals including the committed Doctors, Nurses, Paramedical and Support Staff who have worked and are working tirelessly round the clock to save lives. I also place on record immense appreciation for the hard work put in by Dr. Malathi Arshanapalai, Head of Medical Affairs, Quality and Academics, who has been actively involved in the fight against Covid-19, 24 x 7 in the last 4 to 5 months. She and her colleagues have taken tremendous effort in bringing out this Whitepaper in the midst of the crisis, in order to give the medical fraternity an insight into the eye of the Covid storm.

Dr. Azad Moopen, MD, FRCP
